Chris revisits GCSE revision and refuses to like a rom-com
The programme began with Bronwyn, who recalled meeting Alan Titchmarsh before he was quite as famous and serenading him in a Newcastle pub. Scott was sufficiently taken with the story to tweet Titchmarsh and ask whether he remembered her.
Chris then reviewed Friends with Benefits with unexpectedly forceful disapproval. He found its rom-com structure too predictable, argued that the characters’ lives did not feel real enough, and was swiftly told by Scott, Beccy and the listeners that he was being a grumpy old man.
They also discussed BBC Two’s The Tube, particularly a Piccadilly line driver who gave the Underground routes different personalities. A slightly strange sound on Question Time was another small television discovery that the team enjoyed far more than its seriousness warranted.
For 24 Years at the Tap End, Chris moved to the last day of his GCSEs. He described elaborate revision cards and timetables, but had to admit that he spent a substantial part of the revision period doing manual labour at his friend Dugsy’s house instead.
Dugsy’s family let Chris clear land and knock down an outhouse for a future conservatory while their own son revised indoors, a division of labour Scott found deeply unfair. The edition later included the usual wet and spluttering endgame of Innuendo Bingo, balancing Chris’s school memories with a messier present-day tradition.
