Scott’s Charlie XCX claim starts a breakfast-show war
Scott’s comparison between a Dubai singer and Charlie XCX did not stay on the previous day’s programme. Greg James had found the photo and treated it as the beginning of a breakfast-versus-drive-time dispute, leaving Scott to explain why he had gone from making a confident claim to praising Charlie XCX as a much leaner and more attractive version of the man on the CD sleeve.
Chris was delighted by the escalation. He pointed out that Scott had spent much of the day discussing the supposed resemblance, then immediately tried to soften the point once he realised another presenter had heard it. Scott’s defence became less convincing each time he attempted it.
The Radio 1 film was also becoming more immediate, with its premiere only a week away. The team could finally talk about it as a real event rather than a distant crowd-sourced experiment, although Scott was still very capable of being distracted by a CD cover before giving the project its due attention.
The programme’s energy came from the minor office feud. Beccy had no appetite for a war, Chris enjoyed making the accusation worse, and Scott had the difficult job of denying he had insulted someone while repeating the comparison that caused the problem.
It was a useful reminder of how quickly a throwaway joke could travel around Radio 1. Scott had returned from holiday with a souvenir album and, within a day, had acquired an argument, a breakfast-show response and a new reason for Chris to tease him.
