Sara Cox starts a week in for Scott with facts, fake surgery and app ideas
Sara Cox began a week covering for Scott with an experiment in brisk, punchy links, announcing that she wanted the programme to move at a faster “bam, bam, bam” pace. Beccy sounded politely supportive, but it did not take long for the pair to settle into the more familiar rhythm of teasing Scott while he was away.
Listeners on Twitter had asked what cosmetic procedure had kept Scott off work this time, so Sara and Beccy invented a liposuction explanation. They developed it into a plan to take fat from one part of the body and use it elsewhere, before Beccy diverted the discussion to padded pants and her treasured fact that Brad Pitt’s bottom was supposedly made of latex.
Beccy then attempted a facts feature, spelling it “phacts” to make it sound more hip-hop. The early offerings were not exactly life-changing, including a claim that crisps always expire on a Saturday and the observation that Christmas comes every year. Sara enjoyed the absurdity, especially after a listener accidentally addressed a message to Noel and sent them off on a short Noel Edmonds tangent.
Stupid Street asked people what app they would invent if they could. Sara wanted something that would tell parents where the nearest child-friendly indoor space was when it rained, while Beccy opted for an app that would fire make-up out of a phone. Their own ideas expanded to food tastings, dog walking and a bed that would simply tip its owner out in the morning.
The cover show had the easy, conversational feel of Sara and Beccy trying ideas in real time. It never needed a grand premise: a few questionable facts, several imaginary apps and a running joke about Scott’s appearance were enough to make the first day of the cover run feel properly theirs.
