LMFAO bring Shuffle Bot to Radio 1
LMFAO arrived at Radio 1 with a full party-rock entourage rather than a conventional interview setup. Redfoo introduced dancer Q, Party Mike and Shuffle Bot, whose box-shaped, light-covered head and open hoodie gave Scott plenty to describe for listeners who could not see the studio cameras. SkyBlu was absent after injuring a rib, an incident Redfoo put down to enthusiastic shuffling and “over-wiggling”.
The group had recently been at the MTV EMAs in Belfast and spoke about their own after-party, where Justin Bieber turned up and immediately joined in with the shuffle. Redfoo described Bieber as one of the coolest people he had met, praising his energy and an old-school Charleston-style version of the dance. Bruno Mars also received approval after apparently shuffling in LMFAO’s direction when he collected an award.
Scott tried to pin down what “party rock” actually meant. Redfoo presented it as a general enthusiasm for celebrating with family, friends and anybody around at a wedding or party, with shuffling as the physical expression of that mood. The answer gave Scott licence to keep returning to SkyBlu’s injury and the idea that the group’s dance had become an occupational hazard.
The interview became increasingly visual when Redfoo discussed the censorship smiley faces in the Sexy and I Know It video, the revealing outfits and the possibility of a smiley-face Speedo. He then demonstrated part of his costume live in the studio, with tearaway clothing landing on Scott. Shuffle Bot’s appearance and the studio chaos made the visit feel much closer to the group’s videos than a normal sit-down chat.
With Beccy away giving an inspirational talk to Duke of Edinburgh award recipients, Chris had to play Innuendo Bingo alone. He was thoroughly soaked by clips including Phil Spencer, Zoe Ball, Jamie Oliver and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, and complained that the game was worse without somebody beside him. Scott saved one final clip for the end, despite Chris already being drenched.
