Cher Lloyd joins Grimmy’s celebrity-photo scheme
Grimmy began by promising not to mention Martin Roberts more than four times, after spending much of the previous programme unexpectedly fascinated by the Homes Under the Hammer presenter. Roberts had apparently sent a series of texts and rung the studio himself, which Grimmy treated as proof that his spontaneous campaign had worked. Even his mum emailed to congratulate him on the booking, a response he noted she had not given to Britney Spears.
The actual pop guest was Cher Lloyd, whom Grimmy had first met in a completely ordinary way while helping out in a friend’s shop and giving her directions. He liked the contrast between that encounter and her arriving as a Radio 1 guest, and the interview developed the feeling that they were two people who had already worked out a slightly ridiculous shared joke.
Their plan was to take secret pictures of celebrities at parties and sell them to Heat for £200 each. Cher had access to record-label events and Grimmy had the radio building, so they decided they had the makings of a very low-rent gossip operation and could eventually start a new life somewhere on the proceeds. Neither treated it as a serious plan, which was what made the fantasy entertaining.
The rest of the show made room for Innuendo Bingo and for “Dear Grimmy”, with the Posh Radio 4 Lady reading listeners’ questions. One listener complained about supermarket checkout staff scanning too quickly, while another wanted advice about getting to know a boy in a class with no shared friends. Grimmy’s solutions were characteristically vague, but always more interested in the embarrassment of the situation than a neat answer.
He also admitted to being oddly enthusiastic about Dale’s Supermarket Sweep, arguing that everything in the programme was named after Dale Winton and asking whether he and Beccy could go on it. The combination of Cher Lloyd, celebrity gossip fantasies and supermarket games made it a cover show that was much more about the hosts’ digressions than any standard interview plug.
