Grimmy’s #TotesInappropes stories lead to a surprise Kelly Clarkson interview
Nick Grimshaw continued to cover Scott’s show with a hashtag borrowed from Russell Kane, who had appeared at Scott and Grimmy’s Edinburgh cabaret: #TotesInappropes. It was the prompt for listeners to send in things that had been wildly inappropriate for the situation, starting with the idea that taking a fiancé to Go Ape as a birthday surprise was perhaps not the most romantic route to a proposal.
The stories quickly became more embarrassing. One listener recalled meeting her future in-laws while unable to stop farting at the dinner table, while another had watched a friend massage not his girlfriend’s toes but her friend’s husband’s feet. Grimmy was suitably appalled, repeatedly stressing that even by the show’s standards, some of the examples were too much.
Stupid Street returned with a question about people’s biggest regrets. Grimmy and a caller guessed at bad haircuts, tattoos and relationships, only to find the answers far less conventional: missing a wedding after getting drunk, not investing in property as a six-year-old, getting lost on the way to a supermarket at three in the morning, and leaving the house without enough clothes for the cold.
The programme was also auditioning young listeners for the Radio 1 Teen Awards television trailer. A caller attempted to demonstrate street dancing on the radio, while another played mandolin over a high-energy record. Grimmy enjoyed the impossible task of judging a visual performance from the sound alone, but treated every volunteer as if they might be the trailer’s next breakout star.
The promised mystery guest was Kelly Clarkson. Once revealed, she and Grimmy talked dogs, her rescue animals, her favourite places to tour and her fear of failing to recognise famous people at events. The interview’s deliberately random listener questions made it feel less like a standard promotional chat and more like an extended studio gossip, which suited a show that had spent the afternoon celebrating inappropriate behaviour and very strange regrets.
