Chris starts trading a paperclip for a house
Scott began the day with a public-service announcement prompted by his own discomfort: the sun was hot. He had been outside trying to run with his troublesome leg, believed he had given himself a touch of sunstroke and arrived smelling of aftersun. Beccy agreed the studio had acquired a holiday scent, although she did not entirely share Scott’s surprise that being outside for an hour in strong sun might have consequences.
Beccy had meanwhile spent part of the previous day trying to decode what she thought was a hidden message in a song. After carefully loading it backwards, she discovered that it was simply the same track played in reverse. Scott enjoyed the disproportionate effort she had put into discovering a secret that did not exist.
Chris then announced his latest route to riches. He had read about Kyle MacDonald’s famous trade-up challenge, where a paperclip was swapped repeatedly for increasingly valuable items until it ultimately became a house. Chris fixed on the detail that it had taken 14 swaps and decided this was a sufficiently straightforward business plan for him to copy.
Armed with a small paperclip, he went to Stupid Street to ask strangers whether they had anything of slightly greater value to exchange. Scott and Beccy questioned whether Chris had mistaken an extraordinary internet story for a dependable property strategy, but Chris’s logic was that anything useless to one person could be desirable to somebody else.
The feature treated the gap between a paperclip and a house as the entire point. Chris was earnest about getting started, while Scott and Beccy delighted in the likelihood that the first swap would expose the limitations of his plan. The programme set up the trade-up challenge as another of Chris’s grand ambitions, complete with a tiny object, very large expectations and no obvious route to an estate agent.
