David Hasselhoff joins Legends Week and plays Scott’s dad
Scott’s Legends Week continued with David Hasselhoff, Taylor-Ann Hasselhoff and Hayley Hasselhoff in the studio. The team immediately had to define “legend” in the loose, Radio 1 sense, rather than claim that the week had assembled Paul McCartney, Madonna and the Queen. Hasselhoff fitted the bill anyway, and Scott even found a listener whose former headteacher made the whole school sing Tina Turner’s Simply the Best at assemblies.
The family discussed their reality series, which followed Taylor and Hayley as they worked on their music and acting ambitions. David said the programme had initially struggled in America because it was too nice, with a close family rather than the dysfunction people expected from reality television. The girls said it showed their group Bella Vida in its raw early stages and documented the work they had put into becoming a band.
Hasselhoff also talked about his role on Britain’s Got Talent, admitting he had had enough of performing dogs and disliked contestants who arrived with attitude but no humility. He wore one of his Union Jack jackets, having assumed it was practically compulsory whenever he visited Britain, and joked about whether he would be in Simon Cowell’s chair or on his lap for the live finals.
Scott used the visit to make progress on his listener-filmed Big Weekend movie. He handed Hasselhoff a camera and cast him as Scott’s father, asking him to deliver dramatic lines including “Scott, I know who their leader is”, “Find the Black Eyed Peas, they will help you” and “Beware of Tinie Tempah”. Hasselhoff committed completely, even when Scott kept asking for more feeling or a more threatening delivery.
The visit ended with Innuendo Bingo. Beccy explained the rules, Hasselhoff tried to protect himself with a sheet, and both filled their mouths with water before the clips began. He eventually proved a willing participant, even though he confessed that he did not entirely understand why it was funny. The absurd contrast between a Hollywood star, a towel-like protective sheet and a bin full of water made the final item a properly memorable Legends Week moment.
