Robbie Savage backs Matt Edmondson at the Radio Awards
Back from Düsseldorf, Scott began with the awkward aftermath of Eurovision’s opening events. He had spent time on a bus with Blue and found himself trying to dodge Duncan James’s questions about an old on-air story. Jedward were also in town for Ireland, with Scott reporting that John was struggling with his voice but hoping the pair would be fine for their semi-final.
The programme spoke to Jason Derulo in Los Angeles as Big Weekend approached. Scott revisited Jason’s dramatic shirt-ripping moment at the previous year’s event and was delighted to learn that there had been no special Velcro costume involved. Jason also discussed his new single and sidestepped naming the fellow Brit Awards guest who had splashed his expensive shoes at a urinal.
The evening’s Sony Radio Academy Awards gave the show another storyline. Matt Edmondson was nominated for Rising Star, but was sceptical because he was up against more established names, including Ronnie Wood and footballer Robbie Savage. Scott and the team treated the category as though it were a slightly chaotic election, complete with rival campaigns and an improbable prize offer connected to Savage.
Robbie joined the show and was generously supportive of Matt, arguing that the award should go to someone beginning a career in radio rather than a Rolling Stone. The pair had already exchanged messages online, and their chat mixed friendly flattery with questions about Robbie’s hair, his final Derby match and the prospect of life after football. The support became more amusing because Matt still seemed convinced the nomination was a mistake.
Scott also kept the Lady Gaga documentary firmly in view, explaining that the programme would air that night ahead of her Big Weekend appearance. Chris’s search for the meat-dress maker featured in the build-up, alongside contributions from figures including Billy Piper, Perez Hilton and RedOne. It made the day feel like a junction between Scott’s Eurovision trip, radio awards night and Radio 1’s looming festival weekend.
