Scott tracks down Danny Howard’s old record
Danny Howard joined Scott, Beccy and Chris for another Breakfast Show cover, with Chris still enjoying the accidental nickname “Pete Dong LOL” after mispronouncing Pete Tong. Danny had taken the joke surprisingly seriously, arranging celebratory shirts for Pete Tong’s 20 years at Radio 1, complete with nicknames for the team.
The programme paused for a wonderfully local news item from Bridgwater, where a crowd and police had gathered around an unidentified object in a river. Some people thought it was a turtle; one witness believed it looked more like a pig. The team treated the report as a masterpiece of urgent regional journalism.
Danny then adapted an advert about finding old dance tracks into a challenge. He rang a record shop asking for Rise Again by “See You Play”, a deliberately mangled version of the artist name Suplaé. The shop worker remained politely helpful for one minute and one second before giving up.
Scott and the team also tested whether canned laughter could make isolated comedy punchlines funny. Chris, who normally resisted laughing just because an audience did, was eventually defeated by a line comparing something to “doing a fajita”. The experiment did not advance comedy scholarship, but it produced enough laughter to prove the point.
The Lady Gaga documentary was becoming increasingly ambitious. Scott replayed Gaga saying she would “do anything for Radio 1”, then contacted the representative of Moldova’s Eurovision entry, Zdob şi Zdub, to propose that Gaga take their spare sixth place on stage. The representative was polite, if understandably less certain than Scott that the plan was binding.
