11 March 2011: Scott launches the S-Hits music factory

Scott launches the S-Hits music factory

The final programme of the week began with Scott’s chair collapsing beneath him and Beccy reconsidering a faux-leather gilet she had chosen in the dark. Their early-morning wardrobe review was as uncompromising as it was unnecessary.

Beccy then demonstrated her unusual ability to learn rap lyrics, taking on Pitbull at speed. Scott admired the confidence even while enjoying the fact that it was not necessarily technically polished.

Dear Scott included a listener whose physiotherapy appointment had become awkward after trying to explain the programme’s games and references. The correspondence gave the team another chance to make a listener sound far stranger than they were.

Scott had also found a US company releasing polished-but-unconvincing music videos by aspiring young pop stars. He decided that Radio 1 needed a British rival and called it S-Hits, short for Scott’s Hit Factory.

Gemma was persuaded to become the label’s first act despite repeatedly saying she could not sing. Scott saw no obstacle, promising a bed-based video, a song and a whole roster to follow, while everyone else could see that the business plan had lasted only minutes.
