Willow Smith visits the studio
Scott continued to build Chris’s proposed fly-on-the-wall documentary, now simply called Chris. Chris had already filmed a pilot with his mate Doug, but struggled to make a day involving football, a pub, curry and home look like essential television. Scott was undeterred and added a crowd chant of “Chris” as the show’s opening theme, before the listeners pointed out that it sounded suspiciously like Slade’s Merry Xmas Everybody.
The programme also discovered that Chris was a competitive child with a very specific grievance: he once won a Blue Peter badge for a poem, only for his younger brother to receive the same prize for a far less ambitious rhyme about a cat, a rat and a hat. His other spectacular win had been 600 cans of cheesy beans, a prize Scott could not imagine being useful to either a school or the Comic Relief desert trek.
Willow Smith then came into the studio to introduce her second single, 21st Century Girl. She explained how Jay-Z had first heard Whip My Hair without realising she was Will Smith’s daughter, before meeting her in Japan and deciding that she was a star. Willow’s version of the story included the awkward detail that she had fallen asleep for about ten minutes of their meeting because she had been up late the previous night.
Scott asked about the forthcoming album and Willow’s excitement at hearing her records on Radio 1. She was also happy to talk about celebrity supporters, including Rihanna and Lady Gaga, and described Gaga asking about her music when they met. Her favourite idol, however, was Billy Idol, a choice that caught Scott off guard but which Willow defended as simply “awesome”.
Elsewhere, the team put a twist on a points game by making Chris delete Facebook friends according to how far out he was in a television-clip quiz. He had guessed too low on the number of times Raymond Blanc said “baller” and therefore had to remove ten people. It was a very Scott Mills outcome: a genuine new artist interview alongside a completely unnecessary social-media punishment for Chris.
