Greg James gets his second ear pierced for Comic Relief
Sara’s week covering for Scott brought her into a shared studio with Greg James, whose first ear piercing had already become part of the Comic Relief fundraising campaign. Sara, Beccy and Greg treated the prospect of a matching second stud with the appropriate mixture of sympathy and delight, while Sara admitted that her attempted curry kit had gone wrong after she became distracted by MasterChef.
The programme celebrated the latest donation total, £381,951, which was enough to trigger Greg’s promised second piercing. Greg attempted to argue that he had set the threshold at £400,000, but the team had preserved a clip of him agreeing to £380,679. There was no useful way out of it.
A trained piercer was brought into the studio and Greg sat down for the live procedure. He was presented with pink sparkly studs, asked whether the new look made him resemble Pat Butcher or Delia Smith, and had to endure Beccy laughing far more at the second piercing than she had at the first.
Sara kept the fundraiser connected to the people actually walking in Kenya. The amount was impressive because listeners had been donating alongside Scott, Dermot, Lorraine, Olly and the rest of the trekkers as the conditions became more demanding. The studio stunt was silly, but it gave the appeal another memorable reason to keep moving.
The show also revisited Chris Stark’s Armenian internet romance with Rima, complete with the PR4L’s musical version of the story. It made an apt contrast with the more serious fundraising news: a week of big-hearted listener support still had room for an absurd song about Chris’s unlikely love life.
