13 November 2024: Donations surge and Paul lands on Robin Beck

Day three

Paddy continued north after two consecutive days of around 67 miles.

Fatigue was now accumulating in his legs, hands and backside, but crowds continued to appear along the route.

Scott read messages from listeners who had donated after hearing Paddy speak honestly about the physical toll.

The fundraising accelerates

The public total continued rising rapidly as the matching arrangement encouraged more people to donate.

Scott repeatedly reminded listeners that even the smallest contributions combined into a much larger total.

Messages came from people donating by the mile, after payday or in memory of family members helped by Children in Need projects.

The Birthday Game: Paul

Paul from Worthing turned 55.

He had reached the stage of life where he wanted a camper van and had already bought one.

Paul and his family had travelled around the UK and hoped to take it into Europe, although his older children were more interested in holidays involving aeroplanes.

He liked music from the 1970s through the 1990s, including the Beatles, ELO, Fleetwood Mac and Shakespears Sister.

His daughter had also introduced him to Taylor Swift and Harry Styles.

His first spin was Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next.

Paul rejected it as too modern.

The second was Roy Orbison’s Oh, Pretty Woman.

Despite enjoying it, he gambled again.

His compulsory final song was Robin Beck’s First Time, remembered by many listeners from a soft-drink advert.

Paul accepted the 1988 result.

The road ahead

Scott warned that day four would be the toughest stage, with colder weather, rural roads and difficult terrain waiting in Scotland.

Handover

Scott handed over after another major day of donations and Paul’s third-spin result.
