29 July 2024: Fish in the car, Kate Butch and an Olympic afternoon

I’ve got fish in the car

Scott discovered the phrase “Sorry, I can’t stay — I’ve got fish in the car”.

It was presented as the perfect way to escape an unwanted conversation because it sounded urgent but discouraged follow-up questions.

Scott tested it on somebody approaching him near the BBC and found that the other person had no obvious response.

He challenged listeners to try the line themselves and send recordings.

Kate Butch answers a Kate Bush call

Scott had been trying to contact Kate Bush.

Drag performer Kate Butch heard that somebody called Kate was wanted and rang the programme.

The misunderstanding became an interview about her Edinburgh Fringe show built around Kate Bush songs.

The title was a rude pun on Wuthering Heights, making it difficult to say on daytime Radio 2.

Kate Butch said This Woman’s Work was her favourite song to perform and offered a brief recreation of Hounds of Love.

Christmas cakes in July

At Grandpa’s Cakes in Suffolk, staff were already attaching Christmas ribbons to cakes during one of the hottest days of the year.

Scott noted that there were still 148 days until Christmas.

The Birthday Game

The Monday contestant faced three number-one records from 29 July.

Olympic coverage

The programme followed breaking developments from Paris, including Team GB success and major news from the opening days of competition.

The Music Police

Scott opened another listener case before the Olympic Spinterview with Greg Rutherford.

Handover

Scott handed over after encouraging listeners to deploy the fish-in-the-car excuse responsibly.
