The Jeremy Vine soundboard
To celebrate Jeremy Vine’s 59th birthday, the team assembled a soundboard containing some of his most memorable phrases.
The clips included questions about prized flowers being eaten by large animals, brothers’ Chopper bicycles, planking, slices of cheese sent through the post and the declaration that “fat is not the enemy”.
Scott used the soundboard throughout the programme.
Monty the parrot calls back
Lee returned after Scott questioned whether his parrot Monty had genuinely spoken the name of a smart speaker.
Lee insisted the entire strange recording came from Monty rather than from him.
The parrot became quiet when the phone was placed nearby, making independent verification difficult.
Scott accepted a pinky promise but remained slightly sceptical.
Jeremy’s birthday
Jeremy arrived wearing flip-down sunglasses similar to a style Scott associated with his father.
He demonstrated how they could be worn normally, lowered fully or positioned halfway as a makeshift eye shade.
Scott suggested Jeremy and Gary Davies could bring the style back.
Jeremy shared a music fact linking Steely Dan and the Eagles, explaining the reference to “steely knives” in Hotel California.
The Birthday Game: Jeremy Vine
Jeremy hoped for Steely Dan, the Eagles, Elvis Costello or Van Morrison.
His first spin was Boney M’s Rivers of Babylon, one of the biggest-selling singles of the 1970s.
Jeremy chose to continue.
The second was the Everly Brothers’ Cathy’s Clown.
He accepted it.
His unused third song was OMI’s Cheerleader, number one in 2015.
Jeremy was relieved to have stopped on the Everly Brothers and requested a sustainable birthday card.
The Wonder Years
The Friday Wonder Years followed Jeremy’s appearance and moved through successive years with listener memories and large Friday records.
