23 April 2024: Charlotte Church on nature, music and her 13-year-old self

Radio 2 in the Park speculation

Scott continued teasing the location of Radio 2 in the Park ahead of the official breakfast-show announcement.

Listeners asked yes-or-no questions in an attempt to identify the city.

Scott confirmed that the location had post boxes, neighbourhood watch, paella, birds and BBC Sounds.

Richie Anderson had already begun travelling there in secret for the reveal.

The Birthday Game: Charlotte

Charlotte was a full-time carer for her mother and planned a quiet birthday with homemade cake and pizza.

She crocheted animals and kept a large creation called Thomas the Tomato beside her as a comfort object when she felt nervous.

Charlotte wanted late-2000s and early-2010s music.

Her first spin was Kiesza’s Hideaway, number one in 2014.

She recognised it as exactly the kind of upbeat song she wanted and stopped immediately.

Her unused alternatives were T. Rex’s Hot Love and Fragma’s Toca’s Miracle.

Charlotte said she would still have preferred Kiesza and received the sustainable birthday card.

The Same Interview

Charlotte Church joined Scott to answer the same questions she had faced in an interview from 1999, when she was 13.

An actor voiced her original responses rather than forcing Charlotte to listen to an old recording of herself.

What does Charlotte listen to?

Modern Charlotte described a musical life spanning obscure ambient artists, electronica, Georgian folk, polyphonic music, world music and deep indie.

Her 13-year-old answer had been All Saints, Will Smith, Alanis Morissette and George Michael.

Charlotte said she still enjoyed those artists and defended Big Willie Style as a classic.

What kind of life is she living?

Charlotte now described a life deeply embedded in nature, music and healing.

Her younger self had focused on receiving free clothes, meeting famous people and watching friends begin dating.

The contrast showed how far her priorities had shifted from childhood celebrity towards family, community and wellbeing.

Cardiff

Charlotte also discussed her podcast about Cardiff and her continuing connection with the city where she grew up.
