18 April 2024: Owain joins the force and Mary lands on the Bay City Rollers

Radio 2 mugs

Scott noticed that the office mug cupboard appeared to contain an extraordinary number of Dermot O’Leary mugs.

Sara Cox’s mugs made sense because they were regularly given away, but nobody could explain where Dermot’s had come from.

The Birthday Game: Mary

Mary wanted music from the 1990s onwards but had already identified several birthday number ones she strongly disliked.

She specifically hoped to avoid Four Non Blondes and Martine McCutcheon’s Perfect Moment.

Her first spin was Lewis Capaldi’s Someone You Loved. Mary rejected it.

The second was Usher featuring will.i.am with OMG. She gambled again.

Her compulsory third song was the Bay City Rollers’ Bye Bye Baby, number one in 1975.

Mary had not been born when it topped the chart but accepted the result.

PC Owain Wyn Evans

Owain Wyn Evans joined DCI Mills for a special Music Police induction.

Scott tested whether Owain understood the force’s rules: listen carefully, avoid arresting the first vaguely similar song and never force a verdict that the caller did not recognise.

Owain brought the authority of a BBC presenter and the enthusiasm of somebody who enjoyed solving musical clues.

The pair worked through evidence from the latest case and assessed listener suggestions together.

Voice-note gaps

Scott asked whether leaving a pause at the beginning of a voice note was a sign of getting older.

Listeners who spoke quickly insisted they had no time for silence and began talking the instant recording started.

Handover

Scott handed over after formally welcoming Owain to the Music Police.
