Remembering Annie Nightingale
The programme followed the news that Annie Nightingale had died at 83.
Scott described her as a radio legend, pioneer and somebody he had looked up to throughout his career.
Annie became Radio 1’s first female presenter in 1970 after initially being rejected because of her gender.
She remained on air for more than 50 years and continued seeking out new, developing music throughout her career.
Annie’s first show
Scott replayed Annie describing her first Radio 1 programme.
While trying to be helpful, she pressed stop on a record she believed was simply rotating unused on a turntable.
It was the record being broadcast, producing eight seconds of dead air.
Annie thought she had ended her career immediately but was given another chance.
Scott remembered listening to her Sunday request show after the chart during the 1980s while doing homework.
He praised the way she continued championing new sounds rather than becoming fixed in one musical era.
The Birthday Game: Amanda
Amanda from Lancashire turned 60 and described her life as the Real Housewives of Lancashire.
During a previous girls’ holiday in La Manga, she climbed onto a grand piano in four-inch heels, performed Tina Turner’s Simply the Best and crowd-surfed across the room.
Her birthday plans included a nine-course tasting meal from a Michelin-starred chef and a gown designed by her son.
Her first spin was Rui da Silva featuring Cassandra’s Touch Me. Amanda rejected it.
The second was the New Seekers’ I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing. She gambled again.
Her compulsory final song was Lady Gaga’s Just Dance, number one in 2009.
Amanda was delighted with the result.
New Ariana Grande
Scott gave one of Radio 2’s first plays to Ariana Grande’s Yes, And?
He connected the release with Jonathan Bailey’s visit earlier in the week and the pair’s work together on Wicked.
Listeners compared the production with the mid-1980s sound of Madonna and Natalie Cole.
The Wonder Years
The Friday Wonder Years began in 2005 and moved through successive years.
