8 January 2024: The mayor song, Tim’s washing excuse and Cotton Eye Joe

Back from panto

Scott returned to Radio 2 after spending the festive season appearing in pantomime.

Listeners who had seen the show immediately demanded that he play his solo song about being the mayor.

Scott resisted for much of the programme before accepting that the team had already decided it would be heard.

He also confirmed that, with panto finished, the countdown to his wedding had properly begun.

The Birthday Game: Tim

Tim from Sutton-in-Ashfield turned 57.

Shortly before Christmas, his wife asked him to bring in the washing. Tim tripped, badly sprained his ankle and needed a week away from work.

Although he had fully recovered, he was still using the accident as an excuse to avoid that particular household job and had not yet told his wife.

He celebrated with a trip to the Longleat lights and a shopping visit to Swindon’s outlet village.

Tim liked 1990s music and was a major Queen fan.

His first spin was Flo Rida’s Good Feeling, featuring a sample from Etta James. He rejected it.

The second was Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan’s Especially for You. Tim liked Kylie but not that song and gambled again.

His compulsory final song was Rednex’s Cotton Eye Joe, number one in 1995.

Tim immediately admitted he should have kept Kylie and Jason.

The mayor song

The team played Scott’s pantomime solo after receiving thousands of messages demanding to hear it.

Scott left the studio while the recording aired and encouraged listeners to forget the performance had ever happened.

The song remained available through BBC Sounds, much to his annoyance.

The Music Police return

DCI Mills reopened the Music Police for 2024.

Gary from Bury remembered only a short repeated melodic phrase.

Scott had no immediate idea and described it as a deliberately difficult first case after the Christmas break.

Listeners were asked to investigate before Thursday.

Handover

Scott handed over to Sara Cox after previewing Jonathan Bailey’s visit later in the week.
