The Birthday Game: Carol
Carol from Leicestershire turned 60.
She had worked as a professional dancer in Spain in a variety show featuring Spanish actors and comedians alongside English dancers.
Carol had recently visited “Skeg Vegas” with friends from Hinckley Ladies Netball Club and planned a family barbecue later in the month.
She shared her birthday with Tom Cruise, Sebastian Vettel, Shane Lynch and the late Laura Branigan.
Carol wanted upbeat 1980s or 1990s music and named Gloria Estefan, Take That, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and ABC.
Her first spin was Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean with Hips Don’t Lie, number one in 2006. Carol liked it but chose to gamble.
The second was John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John’s You’re the One That I Want, which had spent nine weeks at number one in 1978.
Carol rejected the Grease classic too.
Her compulsory final song was Captain Sensible’s Happy Talk, adapted from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific.
Carol admitted she probably should have kept Shakira.
Listeners described the decision as one of the game’s clearest examples of two excellent songs being thrown away for a disappointing third spin.
The Music Police
Scott first solved an easy case from Chris in Milton Keynes.
Chris’s dramatic recreation was Barbra Streisand and Barry Gibb’s Guilty.
A harder case came from an anonymous caller.
The remembered fragment contained uncertain references to moonlight and a sailor, alongside a melody that felt familiar to Scott but remained just out of reach.
Scott replayed the evidence and asked the force to investigate.
The case was left open for Thursday.
Planning the Summer Wonder Years
Scott asked listeners whether the forecast was strong enough to justify another Summer Wonder Years.
Messages from different parts of Britain ranged from confident predictions of sunshine to warnings of rain.
The production decision was postponed until later in the week.
Handover
Scott handed over to Sara Cox after announcing that Anita Rani would sit in the following afternoon.
