5 May 2023: The cardboard King, royal DJ requests and George Michael’s Fastlove

The cardboard King

Libby introduced Scott to a cardboard cut-out of King Charles that had been touring her village.

The cardboard monarch visited a primary school coronation parade, the local nursery, playground, community shop and village pub.

The community had previously raised £35,000 to regenerate the playground.

The cut-out was also helping promote a coronation event raising money for the community shop and a new church roof.

Libby and her friend Marianne carried him under their arms and unfolded him after he arrived in a surprisingly small box.

When Scott asked why they had invested so much effort, Libby’s answer was simply: “Why not?”

Scott’s coronation-concert warm-up

Scott revealed that he would be the warm-up DJ for the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle.

He considered playing only British artists and asked listeners for requests.

Suggestions included ABBA, Dolly Parton and the Three Degrees because of the King’s known fondness for the group.

The Birthday Game: Tim

Tim from Norfolk turned 50 and also worked as a DJ.

He named Beyoncé’s Single Ladies, Rihanna and Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance with Somebody as dependable records for filling an empty dance floor.

Tim shared his birthday with Richard E. Grant, Craig David, Adele and Henry Cavill.

His first spin was George Michael’s Fastlove, number one in 1996.

Tim accepted it immediately rather than gambling.

His unused alternatives would have been Duran Duran’s The Reflex and a Harry Styles number one.

Coronation weekend

Listeners reported clocking off for the four-day weekend, travelling to Snowdon and preparing community celebrations.

Scott directed listeners towards Radio 2’s coronation programmes and the BBC’s wider coverage.

The Wonder Years

The Friday Wonder Years included Wilson Phillips’ Hold On from 1990 and Nightcrawlers’ Push the Feeling On from 1994.

Scott also looked ahead to the following week’s broadcasts from Liverpool.
