Eurovision preparations
Scott reacted to former commentary partner Mel Giedroyc describing the Eurovision booth they once shared as “honking” by the end of the week.
Mel sent a voice note insisting she had meant the general atmosphere of sandalwood and adrenaline rather than Scott personally.
Rylan had already begun packing for Liverpool and asked followers to suggest essentials.
The recommendations included sequins, fake tan, a power bank, an umbrella and a Bucks Fizz-style rip-away costume.
Scott also promoted his Eurovision battle with Rylan, judged by an unreliable artificial version of Michelle Visage.
Mae Muller’s Eurovision cover
Scott introduced a special Eurovision performance from Mae Muller and continued counting down towards the Liverpool contest.
He suggested adding an exaggerated “R” before the names of UK entrants, creating “R Mae” and “R Sam”.
Vernon Kay’s birthday
Vernon joined Scott on his 49th birthday shortly before starting Radio 2’s new mid-morning programme.
He shared his birthday with Howard Donald, Bradley Wiggins, Lauren Laverne and Bolton steeplejack Fred Dibnah.
Vernon remembered earlier jobs, including working as a school caretaker, and said having ordinary jobs had helped shape both him and Scott.
The pair also revisited a chaotic trip to Glastonbury during which they had followed instructions to experience the festival as listeners did and were later reprimanded by their boss.
The Birthday Game
Vernon wanted either 1990s indie or dance music.
His first spin was Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World. He rejected it.
The second was Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers with Get Lucky.
Scott recommended Nile Rodgers’ autobiography, particularly its stories about Studio 54 and his work with David Bowie, Diana Ross and Madonna.
Vernon nevertheless gambled again.
His compulsory final song was Sugababes’ Freak Like Me, number one in 2002.
Vernon immediately recognised it as a record from the pair’s peak Radio 1 era and was delighted with the result.
