Scott compared listeners’ experiences of the government’s emergency-alert test.
His own phone did not make the expected sound, while other people received it early or not at all.
Scott had warned his mother in advance because he expected the alarm to be startling. Her phone also remained silent.
Television news channels had stationed reporters in busy streets to capture the moment, only for many of the phones around them to do nothing.
Scott suggested Elaine Paige’s laugh would have made a much more memorable emergency sound.
Eurovision tickets
A second wave of Eurovision tickets went on sale.
Scott said the process appeared more successful than the earlier release, with considerably more listeners reporting that they had secured seats for the shows in Liverpool.
He also heard from a Eurovision fan whose annual party included cardboard cut-outs of Terry Wogan and Graham Norton.
The Birthday Game: Nicola
Nicola from Caerphilly turned 43.
She owned an energetic cockapoo who behaved more like a kangaroo, regularly escaped and regarded himself as a full member of the family.
Nicola planned to celebrate at Center Parcs and wanted music from the 1980s or 1990s, particularly dance music. She also loved Foo Fighters and Stereophonics.
Her first spin was S’Express’s Theme from S-Express, number one in 1988.
Nicola accepted it immediately.
Scott revealed that a hairspray aerosol had been used to create part of the record’s hi-hat sound.
Her unused alternatives were The Beatles’ Ticket to Ride and Beyoncé and Shakira’s Beautiful Liar.
Remembering Len Goodman
The programme followed news of Len Goodman’s death at 78.
Scott heard archive clips of Len’s distinctive judging style and remembered the warmth and humour he brought to Strictly Come Dancing and Radio 2.
The Music Police
Scott opened a fresh Music Police case and invited listeners to send voice notes containing fragments of unidentified songs.
The investigation was carried forward for later in the week.
Handover
Scott handed over to Sara Cox after previewing Paris Hilton’s visit the following afternoon.
