6 June 2006: The Sugababes Call a Record Store Prank

The Sugababes are in the studio to help pull off a practical joke — Keisha calls a record shop and tries to get the staff to recommend their own album without revealing who she is.

Scott Mills explains that the Sugababes have been on the receiving end of practical jokes before, so today they’re turning the tables. The plan is for Keisha to ring a record store and ask vaguely about a song she can’t quite remember, singing humming fragments of it to the staff member, Claire, to see if they can identify it. Keisha attempts a mixed accent during the call — she’s keen to do an Italian one — and describes the song to Claire in deliberately vague terms, even humming the melody down the phone.

Claire from the record shop gamely tries to help, eventually landing on “Push the Button” from the Sugababes’ album *Three* (though the transcript is garbled on exact details). The comedy builds as Keisha asks Claire if she thinks they’re any good, and Claire — not having heard the album herself — gives a diplomatically evasive answer, eventually comparing them favorably to “The Girls” (likely Girls Aloud) and mentioning that the Sugababes “can tend to get quite a lot of good press.”

The reveal comes when Keisha tells Claire it’s actually the Sugababes themselves, with Keisha from the band apologizing for the wind-up. Scott then thanks Claire for being “such a good sport,” and the prank wraps with good humor all around.
