25 September 2024: OXO cubes, butter tricks and the etiquette verdict

William Hanson enters the judging chamber

Scott invited etiquette expert William Hanson to assess the latest collection of listener-submitted Game Changers.

The feature had produced a mixture of practical household tips, food tricks and highly specific solutions to small daily annoyances.

William approached each suggestion with a combination of formality, scepticism and curiosity.

The OXO cube trick

One listener claimed to have discovered an unusually effective way of handling an OXO cube.

Scott regarded the method as almost unbelievable and built it up as one of the strongest entries in the latest round.

William judged whether the trick was elegant enough for civilised use or simply another kitchen shortcut.

Butter and other food hacks

The programme also returned to a butter-related tip that caught Sara Cox’s attention during the handover.

Other suggestions covered food preparation, storage and methods for avoiding unnecessary mess.

William’s role was not merely to decide whether each hack worked, but whether it improved life without creating an etiquette problem of its own.

The Birthday Game

The Wednesday contestant received three number-one records from 25 September.

Scott continued warning contestants not to gamble past a song they genuinely liked purely to satisfy their curiosity.

The verdict

Several hacks earned approval, while others were dismissed as overcomplicated solutions to problems most people did not have.

The strongest Game Changers were those that saved time without requiring specialist equipment or embarrassing explanation.

Handover

Scott handed over to Sara Cox after William Hanson’s etiquette review.
