Doc Brown and Marty McFly
Marty McFly and Dr Emmett Brown arrived from 1985 to promote a gala performance of Back to the Future: The Musical.
The performance at London’s Adelphi Theatre would raise money for BBC Children in Need.
Scott reminded them that his earlier Children in Need challenge had involved walking on a treadmill for 24 hours rather than merely “doing some walking”.
Marty and Doc asked him to encourage listeners to buy tickets for the show.
Gary Davies enters the time machine
Scott asked whether Doc could make space in his workshop for one of the vintage Gary Davies photographs used during the programme’s pub campaign.
Marty recognised Gary as a major radio personality from 1985.
The pair accepted the photograph and promised to place it in the set for the gala performance.
Scott later confirmed that the plan worked: Gary’s picture appeared among Doc Brown’s heroes in the workshop and received a strong laugh from the audience.
The Birthday Game: Lydia
Lydia played from a pub car park in Cornwall while a gin and tonic waited inside.
She had opened the programme shortly after its Radio 2 launch and had become briefly famous in her village when somebody asked about “the Lydia from the radio”.
Lydia turned 58 and wanted middle-of-the-road music, naming Cliff Richard, Tom Jones, Michael Bublé and songs from the 1960s.
Her first spin was Aqua’s Barbie Girl, number one in 1997. Lydia rejected it.
The second was Berlin’s Take My Breath Away, the love theme from Top Gun. She called it romantic but decided to live dangerously.
Her compulsory final song was Eminem featuring Rihanna with The Monster, number one in 2013.
Lydia admitted that she might have preferred Berlin but cheerfully adopted the final result as her birthday song.
