The Birthday Game: Kay
Kay from Rotherham turned 48 and was preparing for a holiday in Corfu.
She was a major Eurovision fan and said she listened to the songs repeatedly.
Kay shared her birthday with Tom Jones, Liam Neeson, Bear Grylls, George Ezra and Prince, who would have turned 65.
Her first spin was Olivia Rodrigo’s Good 4 U. Kay said she was not bothered and rejected it.
The second was Sandi Thom’s I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair). She rejected that too.
Her compulsory final song was Blondie’s Sunday Girl, number one in 1979.
Kay described herself as generally disappointed with all three selections, while Scott saved her blunt reaction for future moments when he needed cheering up.
Trevor Nelson remembers Prince
Trevor Nelson joined Scott to mark what would have been Prince’s 65th birthday.
Trevor chose The Ballad of Dorothy Parker as his favourite Prince song, while also naming Starfish and Coffee, the house mix of Gett Off and I Wanna Be Your Lover among many others.
He described Prince as a walking contradiction: the rebellious spirit of a rock star combined with the voice and musicality of a soul singer.
Despite spending almost 200 weeks in the UK Top 40 and achieving five number-one albums, Prince had only one UK number-one single: The Most Beautiful Girl in the World.
Scott played the track and promoted the BBC Sounds documentary Prince: The Fans’ Story.
Windrush 75
Trevor also discussed a Royal Albert Hall concert marking the 75th anniversary of HMT Empire Windrush arriving at Tilbury Docks.
As the child of Caribbean parents who came to Britain during the 1960s, Trevor described himself as a Windrush baby of sorts.
He was hosting and curating a concert celebrating the musical contribution made by the Windrush generation and their descendants.
The performers included Yolanda Brown, spoken-word artist Salena Godden, Hak Baker, Loose Ends, Beverley Knight and Craig David, accompanied in parts by the Chineke! Orchestra.
Trevor said the Royal Albert Hall remained one of the most special stages in the world.
Handover
Scott handed over to Sara Cox after Trevor’s Prince tribute and preview of the Windrush concert.
