Phrases you hate
Scott and producer Gav compared lists of expressions that irritated them.
Gav disliked “I was today years old”, arguing that nobody needed to introduce a newly discovered fact that way.
He also objected to “life hack” because most supposed hacks were simply tips.
Other disliked phrases included “some personal news”, particularly when the announcement was actually about work; “wherever you get your podcasts”; “I’m here for it”; “we love to see it”; and describing a property as a “forever home”.
Listeners added “Are you going anywhere nice?” before a holiday and “You know what I’m saying?” when the speaker had not yet explained themselves clearly.
The Birthday Game: Jonathan
Jonathan from Derbyshire turned 51.
He liked feel-good music from several genres, particularly records that reminded him of big nights out during the 1990s.
He remembered clubs called Destiny and Elite and had seen DJs including Judge Jules and Pete Tong.
Jonathan shared his birthday with Sam Smith and Grace Jones. The programme also remembered Victoria Wood, who would have turned 70.
His first spin was Liberty X’s Just a Little, number one in 2002. Jonathan rejected it.
The second was Robson and Jerome’s version of Unchained Melody, the biggest-selling single of 1995. He chose to gamble again.
His compulsory final song was Gina G’s Ooh Aah… Just a Little Bit, the UK’s 1996 Eurovision entry.
Jonathan was delighted because it matched the upbeat club music he had requested.
Baby George arrives
James had contacted the programme the previous day while smoking a duck on the barbecue and waiting for his wife Melanie to give birth.
Their son George arrived at 1.55pm while Scott’s show was playing.
James thanked Melanie, midwives Hannah and Daisy and his sister Sarah.
He then announced that the weekend barbecue would be especially memorable, although Scott encouraged him to take a weekend off cooking.
Remembering Andy Rourke
News arrived that Andy Rourke, bassist and founding member of the Smiths, had died at 59 from pancreatic cancer.
Johnny Marr described him as a beautiful soul and a supremely gifted musician.
Producer Stephen Street remembered Rourke as a consummate bass player, a kind person and a great character in the studio.
The week in review
Scott replayed Loreen reacting to the homemade kitchen-table version of Tattoo.
He revisited Animal and Floyd Pepper’s stories about Gary Davies, their version of his famous jingle and the week’s tipping disasters.
The programme’s clip of the week was BBC Look North presenter Amanda Harper accidentally ending the news by saying “good boy”, as if speaking to her dog.
The Wonder Years
The Friday Wonder Years began in 1999.
The sequence included Artful Dodger and Craig David’s Re-Rewind, Mel C and Franz Ferdinand as it moved through successive years.
