Dental eye contact
Scott arrived after dental work with part of his face still numb and asked where patients were supposed to look during treatment. He had experimented with staring directly into his dentist’s eyes, only to discover from the messages that dentists found this intense and unsettling.
Other surgeries provided television screens, films, Where’s Wally posters or pictures on the ceiling. The conversation moved to opticians, whose examinations brought their faces even closer, and prompted Scott to ask whether any listener had ever developed a relationship with either an optician or dentist.
The question produced no immediate confession, but it created a story which would return before the end of the month.
Eastleigh and the Instagram Game
Scott publicly adopted Eastleigh FC because he came from the town and the team faced Bolton Wanderers in an FA Cup replay that evening. His football knowledge remained limited, but Chris told him that he was now positioned to become the club’s prominent celebrity supporter if they progressed to face Leeds United.
The Instagram Game used descriptions of celebrity posts to identify Sam Smith, including healthy food, a new haircut, a photograph with Annie Mac and a GQ award. The game sat alongside news of Radio 1’s Future Festival, before Annie and Huw Stephens joined Real or No Real ahead of the evening broadcast.
The Who party
Jaz and her best friend were holding a joint 25th-birthday “Who party”, devoted to celebrities, food, drink and music which had slipped out of the present day. The hosts would dress as the Chuckle Brothers, while guests planned appearances inspired by Fun House, Justin Timberlake’s noodle hair and Gwen Stefani’s Harajuku era.
The house would be filled with Care Bears, Get Your Own Back and other old references. Red cups contained cherry Hooch, while the buffet included sausages and cheese-and-pineapple on sticks, Wotsits and Frazzles. Scott and Chris accepted responsibility for completing a suitably dated playlist.
