Helen Skelton’s record included ultramarathons, kayaking the Amazon and a high-wire walk at Battersea Power Station. She said the high wire was frightening enough to make her forget to breathe, but a coffin filled with rats had been worse because the container was wide enough for them to crawl towards her face.
Singing remained the challenge she least enjoyed. She had been sent into the West End for We Will Rock You, forgotten the words to “Galileo” and would rather jump from a plane. Her new BBC One programme, The Guess List, allowed her to watch, laugh and set sporting challenges for Matt Dawson and Phil Tufnell instead.
Scott had spent the morning filming a See Summer trailer. A listener’s strange wish had become reality: she sat on a piano while Scott played it and Clean Bandit played table tennis beside her.
Extreme Innuendo Bingo
Helen arrived with spare clothes because she was going directly to Brian Belo afterwards. Her adventurous reputation encouraged Scott to present Innuendo Bingo as an extreme sport, although Helen noted that a truly extreme version would involve petrol rather than water.
The clips included Phil Spencer having “a water” to reveal, Leighton Baines pulling off Gary Cahill, Quentin Letts’s decimated vegetable patch and David Coulthard praising Sergio Pérez for making his rubber last. Caroline Martin returned with three men changing a light and the promise to “blow them every day”. John Inverdale asked whether a tennis player was “still getting pumped”, Elaine Paige laughed at a glimpse of Douglas Hodge’s Wonka and Martha Kearney proposed putting pictures of her jam on Twitter.
Helen’s huge sprays repeatedly knocked Chris backwards and almost off his chair. Scott called the result a corker, and Helen left soaked but entirely unsurprised that the game had lived up to its reputation.
Two Girls, One World Cup
The new quiz used conversations between Fiona from the Breakfast Show and Jade from 1Xtra. Both enjoyed World Cup gossip without discussing much football. Scott showed them a player’s photograph and asked Chris and the audience to identify him from their observations.
The first player had a tan concentrated on his forehead, bright white teeth, a thick neck, carefully combed hair and enough vanity to keep a mirror in his pocket. Fiona and Jade imagined him wearing too much aftershave, appearing in The Only Way Is Essex, attracting Gemma Collins and having dated Paris Hilton.
The answer was Cristiano Ronaldo. The girls had described one of the tournament’s most recognisable players in detail without naming a club, country or footballing ability. The feature was scheduled to continue, while Chris had to explain that this Ronaldo was not the “fat Ronaldo” he had made famous the previous week.
Charlie Sloth returns from Gran Canaria
Charlie Sloth returned from a week of resort appearances to play Real or No Real. Across the Twilight films there really are about 26 minutes of staring. A blue whale really could not swallow Alan Dedicoat because its throat is only about the width of a watermelon.
Jamie Carragher had not cut his tongue while drinking champagne from the FA Cup. Charlie also had to face his pre-tournament advice that Scott should place a large bet on England winning; fortunately Scott had ignored it. Stray dogs really can identify the most attractive member of their pack and send it to beg humans for food. Scott won 20–10, despite Charlie’s stories about resort security, expensive jewellery and being rushed by fans taking almost as long as the facts themselves.
