Chris discovers grown-up bills
Chris was settling into a new flat and discovering the less glamorous markers of adulthood: bills, boilers and the responsibility for making sure domestic things actually worked. Scott was entertained by the idea of Chris encountering all of this as new information.
There was also another look ahead to Ylvis’s visit and a Christmas debate. Scott wondered whether the world really needed a new festive record every year. Perhaps the better route was simply to give recent songs enough time to age into classics.
Nihal’s favourite feature
Nihal arrived for Innuendo Bingo with a dangerous amount of enthusiasm, describing it as his favourite feature on British radio. He was about to learn that enjoying it through a speaker and sitting opposite Chris with a mouthful of cold water were different experiences.
The clips included a six-inch pipe from Homes Under the Hammer, Simon Rattle referring to an 11th finger, a heavy plug hole, Phil Spencer talking about an “unsightly erection” and Kate Humble supplying another unfortunately phrased line. Cauliflower cheese, plums, a bottom-related donkey discussion and several more innocent broadcast sentences kept the water moving.
Nihal’s laughter made containment almost impossible. He ended thoroughly soaked and increasingly cold, but still sounding as though his affection for the feature had survived the experience.
Zane’s Eminem session
Zane Lowe’s work with Eminem was becoming one of the week’s Radio 1 events. The recorded session included “Berzerk”, “Survival”, “Stan” and “Not Afraid”, alongside a major interview. Scott treated it as the completion of Zane’s dream run of encounters with the biggest names in rap.
That prompted him to construct a rather different dream rap trilogy for himself: Flo Rida, Zayn Malik and Pitbull. Zane played along when Scott put the idea to him, despite the categories becoming increasingly flexible.
“Ahoy” on Real or No Real
Greg James joined Real or No Real, where the revelation of the day was that Alexander Graham Bell had preferred “ahoy” as a telephone greeting. That one was real.
A story about a woman accidentally cutting Armenia’s internet while digging also turned out to be real, while other claims involving the voices of Dave and Viva and a Wi-Fi idea were not. Scott managed a full 40 points, and “ahoy” briefly looked like a perfectly reasonable way to answer the phone again.
