Scott’s Strictly support keeps going wrong
Scott had appeared on Strictly: It Takes Two to talk about the programme’s music and again found himself being asked who he supported. The show’s loyalty problem was becoming a running curse.
Vanessa Feltz had already left. Now Deborah Meaden, another long-time friend of the show, had been eliminated too. Scott and Chris concluded that their public support was less an advantage than a kiss of death.
Scott still liked Susanna Reid, but a note arrived during the programme reminding him that Rachel Riley would be playing Innuendo Bingo the following afternoon. Practical self-interest won: he declared himself Team Riley for the week.
The team even had unused Team Meaden shirts that had been made before her elimination, creating a slightly awkward wardrobe problem for Rachel’s visit.
Exactly 24 mates
Friday’s Liam Payne interview had left one word ringing in everybody’s ears. Liam called Scott and Chris “mate” so often that the show went back and counted them.
Listeners guessed the total for Danny Howard points. Scott chose 24, and the producer’s final count confirmed it: 24 “mates” in roughly ten minutes.
They replayed the sequence as a rapid-fire montage, turning an ordinary conversational habit into another piece of show mythology. Scott took it as further evidence that he and Liam were genuinely mates; Chris was less certain about where he ranked.
Chris changes his mind about Gaga
The weekend had also transformed Chris’s view of Lady Gaga. He had never been completely convinced, but her X Factor performance pushed him towards the theory that the whole exaggerated pop-star spectacle was knowingly funny.
Scott, normally the easier Gaga convert, was now the one asking whether everybody had seen enough. Their positions had effectively reversed.
Dan and Phil play Monday’s Real or No Real
Dan and Phil returned for Real or No Real, with facts ranging from early viral videos to Danish road signs warning drivers about “fart control”. The phrase was real enough to give the game exactly the immature finish Scott and Chris wanted.
The next afternoon, though, attention would be back on Strictly. Rachel Riley was coming in, and the show desperately hoped supporting her would not produce the same result as everybody else.
