Dan and Phil search for Edinburgh’s strangest talents
Listener Claire introduced the show by claiming that she had fallen down a volcano during a trip to Vesuvius. The reality was less dramatic than Scott first imagined: while rushing back to a waiting coach, she slipped and skidded about six feet on her bottom. Scott advised her to improve the story by saying that she had plunged into molten lava, then tested his own knowledge of the volcano’s history.
Dan Howell and Phil Lester joined Scott as talent scouts for the returning Fun and Filth Cabaret at the Edinburgh Festival. They wanted listeners to perform unusual talents live from their bedrooms via webcam, with bizarre acts, animals, magic and impressions all welcome. Scott revisited Dan and Phil drawing cats on their faces at the previous year’s show and invited prospective performers to leave their rooms authentically untidy.
The first suggestions included looking at an elbow, using 50 hula hoops and performing with a flatulent duck. Andy then claimed that he could balance a sunlounger on his chin, a skill discovered on holiday to his girlfriend’s embarrassment. He hoped to progress to a bicycle and agreed to send photographic or video evidence for a possible appearance in Edinburgh.
Scott tested another lyrics call by ringing his agent Tom and speaking only in lines from D’Banj’s “Oliver Twist”. Tom patiently tried to follow the increasingly strange conversation, offered to call Scott “Oliver” and never identified the song. That meant neither Beccy’s two-and-a-half-minute prediction nor Chris’s 90-second guess earned any Danny Howard points.
With athletes and spectators arriving for the Olympics, Scott welcomed passengers from a succession of newly landed flights and tried to make the programme the official supplier of nudie pens to the Games. In Oh, What’s Occurring?, the team counted uses of “eruption” and its variations across two episodes of Volcano Live. Beccy guessed 20 and Chris chose 30, but the compilation produced 59.
