Aiden Grimshaw gets drenched in Innuendo Bingo
Listener Lewis admitted spilling a mocha over Davina McCall after turning around too quickly in a London coffee shop. Despite having only £5, he offered to pay for her dry cleaning, while McCall laughed off the accident and offered him an autograph. Scott decided that unexpectedly throwing coffee over celebrities might be an effective, if unwise, test of how pleasant they really were.
Scott described an awkward question-and-answer session for the BBC staff who would soon become Radio 1’s neighbours in Broadcasting House. Trevor Nelson introduced him to a room full of people, only for nobody to ask anything until Beccy supplied a suspiciously flattering question. A discussion about the new building’s microwave was the closest the session came to practical detail.
Aiden Grimshaw returned after a previous night out involving his first curry and enthusiastic singing to 1980s power ballads. He then faced Chris in Innuendo Bingo, with clips from Come Dine with Me, Volcano Live, Steve Lamacq, Test Match Special, BBC Breakfast and Fearne Cotton. Aiden began the game politely but eventually soaked Chris, while his own denim outfit absorbed enough water to make his journey home distinctly uncomfortable.
The team investigated whether Lady Gaga had called an overnight talk show on Melbourne station 3AW to praise her own concert. The caller introduced herself as Stephanie from Richmond, Gaga’s real first name, sounded remarkably like her and discussed the show’s costumes. Scott admitted that he had once called an American cable programme from his Miami hotel bathroom to defend Brokeback Mountain.
That led to a replay of Matt Edmondson catching Hoosiers singer Irwin Sparkes requesting his own records under different names in texts to Radio 1. Grimmy later joined the team as Scott asked whether Radio 1 presenters went “hard” or went home, before Oh, What’s Occurring? tested how many members of the public on Great Portland Street claimed to go hard. Six of the eight people chose the more energetic answer.
