Chris pitches dirty dragon pens to Deborah Meaden
Scott broadcast from the Radio 1 Academy at Hackney Picturehouse, where young people could attend free workshops on business, comedy, digital media and creative careers. He explored the building and interrupted a stand-up class whose participants were learning to find comedy in ordinary stories. Back in the temporary studio, Chris said the stage, decks and lighting reminded him of running a mobile disco as a teenager.
Beccy and Chris gave the Academy an Innuendo Bingo masterclass. Clips covered a “huge lifter”, a “big cock in the living room”, somebody being “fingered” and Fearne Cotton promising to “gush quite a lot”. Both players ended soaked, although Chris was prevented from stripping to his boxers because the team were broadcasting in a public venue full of people attending career sessions.
Deborah Meaden arrived to explain how she had started importing Italian ceramics at 19 and why a promising idea was not the same as a workable business proposition. Chris pitched an app that summoned nearby ice-cream vans, a chain of late-night cottage-pie restaurants and, finally, “dirty dragon pens” featuring the Dragons’ Den panel. Deborah rejected all three and audibly gasped at the final suggestion.
Adam Deacon, Ashley Walters and Jaime Winstone joined the show before their film and television question-and-answer session. They agreed that there was no single route into the industry, describing the value of persistence, networking, making sensible choices and using services such as YouTube to put work in front of an audience. Jaime also spoke about proving that her ambition came from her own love of acting rather than her famous father.
The day ended with David Hasselhoff playing Carry On Singing. Presented with current tracks, he abandoned the real lyrics and improvised about pencils, police, skirts and a woman wearing a thong. His four performances bore little resemblance to Rihanna, Ben Howard, Flo Rida or Maroon 5, but provided a characteristically chaotic finish to the Academy broadcast.
