6 February 2012: Dappy’s cod-liver-oil routine and Madonna introduces the show

Dappy’s cod-liver-oil routine and Madonna introduces the show

The programme began with a genuine introduction from Madonna, which the team immediately tried to improve by inventing extra “facts” for her to say. The result gave them a chance to imagine the pop star announcing that she could only cook Rice Krispie cakes or hated the colour orange.

Dappy joined Scott to discuss being announced for Radio 1’s Hackney Weekend. He was still working on his solo album and initially seemed less certain than Scott about the scale of the event, including the number of artists, stages and people expected at Hackney Marshes.

His explanation of his current routine was the highlight. Dappy said he was sleeping in the day, working in the studio through the night, jogging and doing press-ups, then keeping himself going with cod liver oil, vitamin C and fresh chicken.

Scott treated the cod liver oil endorsement as though it were a major new health discovery, while Dappy kept insisting it helped with energy and metabolism. Their increasingly baffled conversation made the most ordinary supplement sound like the secret behind his entire recording schedule.

The show combined the scale of Hackney Weekend with the deliberately silly energy of the team’s regular links. Madonna’s voice, Dappy’s night-shift creativity and his determined sales pitch for fish-oil tablets made for an unusually starry but still characteristically chaotic afternoon.
