Scott becomes Kate Middleton for the day
The week’s Face Your Fantasy experiment had taken a slightly awkward turn: instead of confronting their own wishes, Scott, Beccy and Chris had drawn one another’s from a hat. Scott picked Beccy’s desire to spend a day as Kate Middleton, then immediately pointed out that becoming the Duchess of Cambridge was much more appealing to Beccy than it was to him.
Beccy nevertheless organised the royal treatment. Scott’s legs were waxed by Dev, who admitted he had never waxed anyone before, then he was put into make-up and a dress so he could make a proper public appearance. The resulting Duchess was limping around Radio 1 with sore legs and, by Scott’s account, looking rather less convincing than Kate Middleton.
The central ordeal was a walkabout. Scott stood outside in the dress, tried to master a royal wave and approached passers-by with the direct question: “Would you like to meet me?” The replies were not encouraging. One person was in a hurry, another had a crying baby, and a woman who did agree to a picture was more interested in Scott’s unusual outfit than any supposed royal status.
He also tried to book a suitably grand dinner for himself and “Prince William”, only to have to explain the state visit to an unimpressed café. The joke throughout was that Beccy’s idealised royal day had turned into a sequence of low-budget tasks, awkward strangers and Scott trying to retain dignity in a dress during a gust of wind.
Elsewhere, the team prepared the next fantasy, with Chris due to eat sushi from Beccy while she acted as the plate. Dear Scott included a listener who had become unintentionally associated with “painting with my boobs” after a breast-cancer-awareness fundraiser, and Matt Edmondson joined the show as Stupid Street tried to name the greatest Scottish person ever. The answers ranged from David Tennant to badly remembered versions of Braveheart.
