22 March 2011: Radio 1’s Big Weekend is announced for Carlisle

Radio 1’s Big Weekend is announced for Carlisle

Scott and Beccy broadcast from a school hall, surrounded by chairs and the uneasy feeling of being back at assembly. The location was kept secret at first, despite a growing number of clues.

They gave listeners the same currency, the same head of state and the same first language, then wandered around the school looking for hints. Scott was especially pleased by the chance to host a real assembly at nine o’clock.

The reveal confirmed that Radio 1’s Big Weekend would be in Carlisle on 14 and 15 May. Scott could finally say the name without stopping himself halfway through a sentence.

Beccy supplied Carlisle facts, while Smooth Talking Dan went into the city centre to tell people that the event was coming. Scott suggested increasingly impractical ways local businesses might share the news, including messages in bakery icing and a Big Weekend pizza.

The show captured the scale of a major Radio 1 announcement without losing its familiar silliness. Scott wanted the city to feel excited, but also wanted someone to put his face on a pizza, which was not quite the official marketing strategy.
