2 April 2008: David Tennant and Catherine Tate with Hawaii Chair Stunt

David Tennant and Catherine Tate visit to promote Doctor Who’s fourth series, with the Doctor himself attempting the infamous Hawaii Chair exercise machine – with chaotic results.

With Doctor Who’s new series kicking off on Saturday at the unusual time of 6:20 p.m., David Tennant and Catherine Tate are in the studio. The show opens with Chappers quizzing David on facts about his career – revealing that David Tennant isn’t actually his real name, he drives a Prius, and he was once in a short-lived boy band called The Dream Lovers. Catherine confirms her appearances in The Bill, having played three different characters before leaving to pursue acting full-time.

A highlight of the episode is the “Doctor Who Alien or Casualty” game, where listeners hear audio clips and must guess whether they’re aliens from the Doctor Who series or scenes from the medical drama Casualty. David and Catherine do remarkably well identifying their own show’s creatures, correctly spotting the Judoon and other aliens.

The episode’s most memorable moment comes when they attempt to test the Hawaii Chair – an American ab-toning exercise machine that supposedly works through a hula motion. After an earlier attempt broke it, they manage to get it working briefly, with David trying it for all of two chaotic seconds. The machine spins violently before appearing to malfunction again.

Adele appears via the “Would You Rather” feature, choosing between being stuck in railings (referencing a real incident in Los Angeles) or being handcuffed to footballer Dele Alli. The show also features Barryoke, with Barry from West Mercia Police singing a memorable rendition, and Chappers attempting to lead a “Name That Tune” quiz on a keyboard despite admitting his piano skills ended when he was nine.
