13 December 2007: Mika Finds Saucy Accessories in Jo Whiley’s House

Mika uncovers some unexpectedly risqué items hidden in Jo Whiley’s wardrobe, Scott repeatedly denies planting photos of himself in Jo’s bedroom, and the American Dial-a-Carol service gets increasingly irritable after being overwhelmed by Radio 1 listeners.

The show opens with Scott calling the University of Illinois’s annual Dial-a-Carol service—a 47-year-old festive tradition where callers can request Christmas songs. After Scott gave out the number on air the previous day, the service has become overwhelmed; when he calls, he’s told they now only sing to every hundredth (or possibly 200th) caller due to the volume of British calls. The operator is visibly frustrated. Laura attempts to charm them into singing by mentioning her birthday and turning 40, which works—they make a special exception and sing to her.

The main story involves Jo Whiley, who earlier in the week visited Mika’s bedroom on her show and discovered photos of Scott Mills next to Mika’s bed. Scott spends considerable time protesting his innocence, insisting he had nothing to do with placing the pictures there. As the banter continues, it emerges that Mika (and possibly Jo) have planted far more than just photographs in Jo’s wardrobe: Scott hints darkly at finding a policewoman’s outfit, a black PVC suit, heart-shaped sequined tassels, and a red pom-pom necklace. Scott eventually admits to the prank while maintaining plausible deniability throughout.

The show ends with a running gag: a “pointless survey of the day” where they took a photo of Chappers (Dan Leno, the show’s regular contributor) onto the streets of Britain and asked strangers what he was famous for. The responses are amusingly off-base, with people suggesting he’s a drunk, a chef (possibly Jamie Oliver’s relative), and various other incorrect guesses—providing what Scott sardonically notes is equally valuable research as German studies about the health benefits of staring at women’s breasts.
