31 October 2006: Guess the Growler and Flirt Divert Special

Halloween 2006 brought voicemail games, celebrity gossip, and an Amy Winehouse interview fresh from the MOBO Awards, where she heckled Bono alongside her dad.

The show opened with news of David Hasselhoff partying in California at a Baywatch reunion with Pamela Anderson. Hoff claimed the show was instrumental in saving lives, citing a story about children in hospital wards who learned lifesaving techniques from watching the series — a claim met with appropriate scepticism from the team. Hoff was also set to perform a one-off gig in Liverpool in support of jailed football fan Michael Shields.

The team discussed the first picture of Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Coulter in the film adaptation of Philip Pullman’s *His Dark Materials* trilogy, with Lyra Belacqua to be played by a young actress. Listeners were directed to Radio 1 Online to see the image.

Amy Winehouse was in for an interview, having just attended the MOBO Awards. She recounted a funny moment where she and her dad were sitting next to Bono during the ceremony. When they stood up clapping, Bono turned and gave her dad a look that said “stand up,” thinking they were standing to acknowledge him — leading to her dad dutifully standing up in response. She also spoke about her recent album *Back to Black*, which had just been released that week, and mentioned being told by Pete Tong that she’d gained three stone as she was getting too skinny. There was joking banter about her night out and whether she’d fully recovered by the following day.

The show featured the regular “Guess the Growler” game and the “Oh Booby” feature on the Flirt Divert voicemail, plus discussions of dinner dates involving bread enthusiasts and references to “Buckfast boy” — though the transcript clarity on these segments is limited.
