17 August 2006: The Man Who Faked His Own Death and Lloyd’s Triumphant Return

A bumper compilation featuring one of the show’s most outrageous caller stories — a man who faked his own death to escape an unwanted romantic connection — plus the hugely popular return of Lloyd, the 10-year-old football expert.

The episode opens with a follow-up to the previous day’s story about Nick, who claimed to be gay to break up with his girlfriend. Today brings an even more extreme tale: a caller reveals how his mate pretended he’d died via text message to shake off an overeager girl who’d originally contacted him through a misfired answer machine. The caller and his friends then orchestrated a fake funeral — which the girl actually attended, only to accidentally wander into someone else’s real funeral service before realizing the deception. The caller later rang her with the “surprise” reveal that he was alive, though it didn’t go down well.

The show then plays a sympathetic call centre audio clip that makes Scott genuinely feel bad for cold-call operators dealing with an angry customer, before welcoming back Lloyd, the football-loving 10-year-old who was a breakout hit during the World Cup coverage. Lloyd reveals he got two B’s and an A in his exam results, discusses the new England manager and captain, and admits he’s got a girlfriend — leading Scott to jokingly suggest organizing a junior version of the “Love Bus” feature that found love for Laura.

The episode closes with heartwarming follow-up news: Molly, a six-year-old girl the show surprised in hospital back in November after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, has had her latest CT scan come back clear. Her mum Emma confirms she’s back at school with her hair growing back in curly, and Molly herself comes on to chat about meeting the presenters and how much better she’s feeling, though she’ll need regular check-ups for five years before getting the all-clear.
