Neil Sloan

Neil Sloan is a British radio producer and executive, currently Managing Editor of BBC Radio Wales. He is best known to listeners of The Scott Mills Show as one of the show’s silent Broadcast Assistants — characterised on air by Laura Sayers as “the Judith Chalmers of Radio 1” for his apparent frequency of holidays — and to fans of The Greg James Show as Producer Neil, a recurring presence in on-air banter throughout James’s Radio 1 career.

BBC Radio 1

The Scott Mills Show (2004–2005)

Sloan joined The Scott Mills Show as a Broadcast Assistant in 2004. Like producer Emlyn Dodd, he was one of the show’s non-speaking team members — present, known to listeners, but rarely heard. While Broadcast Assistant Laura Sayers was given an active speaking role on air, Sloan remained largely silent, once answering a question about whether he had a doctor’s note excusing him from speaking: “Of course not — I have a perfectly fine voice. I simply prefer not to speak in my role.”

His presence on the show was nonetheless warmly felt. Laura’s description of him as “the Judith Chalmers of Radio 1” — owing to his apparent frequency of time off — became a running characterisation, though Sloan offered a rebuttal: he worked extensively on weekend and bank holiday shows, producing Chappers and Dave’s weekend morning programmes alongside his Scott Mills duties. He also covered Christmas Day when Emlyn Dodd was unable to come in.

He departed the show in late 2005 to work with Radio 1’s newest presenters, Fearne Cotton and Reggie Yates, on the Early Breakfast Show.

From Fearne and Reggie to Greg James (2005–2013)

Sloan produced Fearne Cotton and Reggie Yates on Early Breakfast until 2007, when the pair moved to Weekend Breakfast. JK and Joel were presenting Early Breakfast Monday to Thursday but did not present Fridays due to the Chart Show, leaving Sloan overseeing guest presenters for the Friday slot. In September 2007, Greg James took over the Early Breakfast Show full time, and Sloan became his producer — a partnership that would last for the remainder of his time at Radio 1.

He became known to listeners as Producer Neil through his on-air presence on The Greg James Show, with his occasional arguments with James even becoming the subject of a segment on Oh! What’s Occurring? on The Scott Mills Show.

Sloan left BBC Radio 1 in March 2013 after nine years at the corporation.

Post-Radio 1 career

After leaving the BBC, Sloan worked as an Audio Output Manager at Wise Buddah from April 2013 to July 2014. He then joined Communicorp UK in July 2014 as Programme Director at Capital South Wales, later becoming Group Programming Director, overseeing programming teams for their Capital, Heart, Smooth and XS Manchester stations.

In December 2022, it was announced that Sloan would leave Communicorp UK to join BBC Radio Wales as Managing Editor. On his appointment, he said: “I’m really excited to be joining BBC Radio Wales to lead the talented team and continue to create outstanding content to inform, educate and entertain the audience across Wales.” BBC Radio Wales Editor Carolyn Hitt described his career as spanning more than twenty years, from the BBC and independent sector through to commercial radio, with a track record in “distinctive broadcasting, content marketing, digital strategy and leading diverse programming teams.”

His career highlights, per the BBC’s own announcement, include nurturing a young Greg James at Radio 1, alongside a wider roster of presenters including Scott Mills, Fearne Cotton, Vernon Kay, Terry Wogan, Johnnie Walker, and Michael Ball. As an executive producer he also led on documentaries and podcasts for Radio 4, BBC World Service, and BBC Radio Wales, and has served as chair of the Radio Academy in Wales.

From his own Q&A (June 2005)

In June 2005 he answered some questions for Unofficial Mills about the Scott Mills show:

You don’t say much on the show, do you have a note from your doctor saying you can’t speak? Of course not – I have a perfectly fine voice I’m simply prefer not to speak in my role.

Laura claimed that you’re the ‘Judith Chalmers of Radio 1’ because you’re always on holiday, would you agree with this and where’s your favourite holiday destination? I have more time off the show than her as I tend to work a lot of weekends and bank holidays on other shows… be it producing Chappers and Dave or having a dreadful time in the mud at Glastonbury. Oh, and as Emlyn always reminds me, I did work on Christmas Day, when he couldn’t be arsed to come in and produce Scott. I suppose he does have children, though, so that’s allowed. My favourite holiday destination is either Vancouver or Dubai – 2 extremes in temperature!

What’s your favourite kind of music? My favourite artist of all time is Prince. The man is a musical genius. Bit weird, though. It’s hard to say about current artists… as we have Radio 1 on in the office all day long, new music is constantly going through our heads.

What work do you do for the show? All the things behind the scenes that make it sound (reasonably!) good on the air.

What’s your favourite food and beverage? Food? Hmmm… Nandos always goes down a treat – and I’m a big fan of Magners. (Alcohol is only for those over 18. Please drink responsibly). I’m very pleased it’s becoming widely available in many bars and pubs now.

Which Radio 1 DJ would you like to work with? Every DJ is talented in their own unique way. I’ve worked with many different DJs in the past few years – and hope to work with many more in the future.

Do you have a funny story to tell about your work? There are many, many stories to tell… one doesn’t stand out. I guess you’ll have to wait for my book to be published.

What’s your favourite song to sing at karaoke? I had only ever sung one song before I went to Mallorca – which was Wham’s ‘I’m Your Man.’ However in Monroe’s Karaoke Restaurant in Palma Nova I had a go at ‘Man! I Feel Like A Woman’ by Shania Twain and ‘C’est La Vie’ by B*witched.

Have you ever given out the Flirt Divert number to anyone? No.

When working with Scott, did you find he was a ‘diva’ DJ? Not in the slightest.

And finally, from one of our message board users, how many pegs can you fix to your face? I’ve never tried fixing any pegs to my face, but then I don’t have a washing line – as I don’t have a garden. Sorry.
