  1. I still stand by the fact that the show sounded pretty fresh and fun in 2012 and 2013, but since Fincham's departure, I feel it's gone on a downward trajectory.
However, saying that, Moyles' Radio X show is really quite poor. The "half hour chat" is full of pauses, erms and boring bits. It's also always very Chris-centric. I listened this morning and in fairness it's the first time I've properly laughed twice at the radio in ages, but it just all sounded a bit unnecessarily drawn out. And naff imaging. Everything feels redundant.

I don't want to be the one that says it - but I think radio is slowly dying. There's just not the investment anymore, be it in money or skills - unless R1 come up with some fresh ideas I think that too many people will be lost to downloads and streaming; which sadly could ultimately result in the end of R1 forever [emoji22]
  2. I think the issue with this package is that it sounds far too generic and like it could have been slapped together in Audacity. It could even be a template. The big mash up of sound effects and punchy noises is genuinely too confusing in the morning, and it's not distancing itself enough from commercial breakfast radio anymore.
The Breakfast Show only has one feature now, and many commercial shows are similar. I think it either needs to be really tight or quite loose, not halfway inbetween.
    I'm switching to Radio X.

I think it says something is seriously wrong when the one guy on this site that defends Grimshaw has given up on him!

Sadly that's what it might look like. Maybe they should try something new on new years eve, where they pick 12 people, between 14 and 18 years, to do their own hour of Radio, presenting their new years eve party Anthems or so, instead of that celebrity sh... Stuff.

His days of working alongside Christian O Connell at Virgin Radio

Yeah I wasn't 100% sure on that. Atm the only reference I have of him and O'Connell was on a DigitalSpy thread and that mentioned them both on 5 Live at some point but no mention of Virgin. Is this documented anywhere do you know?

  5. Ok, so it's annoyed me for a long time that Chris Smith hasn't been recognized on Wikipedia with his own page, he's certainly notable enough! I've written the following article for him, but it got declined because there aren't enough references to prove notability (which is BS because Tina's article has the same amount of references)

So i'm looking to enlist the help of the knowledgeable people on UM, if you have anything to contribute, edit the article here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Matthewm192/sandbox (reference no2 is a clip of vintage Scott btw)

If you can find ANY article anywhere referencing Chris, but don't know how to add it then just reply below and I'm sure I'll be able to include it.

    Thank you for your help!

  6. I haven't heard much of him on early breakfast - tbh most of his weekend cover annoys me so idk if he'll get a slot. Saying that he jacked his job in at his Manchester station recently so maybe he heard there might be something up for grabs...

On a separate note I LOVE Adele in for Clara - she's much more up beat, professional, has a better way with words. She's just simply more enjoyable to listen to and doesn't bore me like Clara so often does!

  7. Is that right? Surely if that was the case most of the shows would sound uniform, but they don't. E.g Clara tends not to play TOHs and only plays IDs, Scott plays a range of TOHs, Matt plays the BOHs with his name on them, Dev doesn't play his own name idents - only the generic R1 ones, Greg tends not to play any at all, etc etc. It sounds like each DJ does choose, and they all have their own preferences.
Also, as far as I'm aware it's up to the DJ to start the news ramp at 29:48 - it doesn't get played automatically. That's why on occasion you get a large gap between the jingle ending and the newsreader starting, or the newsreader crashing the jingle.
Although I think when they do the three-song segues where the songs are cut down to two minutes with the branded intros, those are all pre-mixed to sound tight af.

I'm not saying anything is played 100% automatically - I'm saying the system sets up everything they are gonna use in the show so they don't have to search for it in the database, and gives timings in accordance. It also has the ability to count down on talk buckets/ramps to the vocal line. If you look in the picture you can see on the top right Scott's set up for the day, with timings and idents all logged in to the system.

I would assume the variation would be based on the producer/DJ, whoever sets up the order (the music order will be given by the Music Team). The fact that each DJ tends to have consistently the same set up would suggest this, so that whenever they go to make a new show they just change the music order and keep the idents (for example Greg ALWAYS plays the same ident out of the 1630 news, and always version 2 of that ident out of the 1700 news)

Saying this, the mistakes don't make sense. Like when Greg ends up playing the 10 Minute Takeover jingle instead of an ident. I suppose the answer to that would be that unless some kind of scrolling goes on the channel stays the same as it was previously, so the previous jingle would restart rather than the next one in line.

PS so glad I'm not the only one that knows that Newsbeat bed goes at 29:48 I HATE it when DJs (most often Clara) do it at like 29:46 and the DJ is just sitting there twiddling his thumbs till the top of the hour - how hard is it to press a button at the right time eh? 5f705baccfe4390720522d40086baaa0.jpg

I didn't realise until recently someone has to push a button for every single jingle. Kinda makes sense though, autocue could easy trigger the wrong one. But they're sitting there in front of a whole selection, and they choose the newer ones. Grr.

My understanding (from what I've seen on live streams/Greg's Snapchat/various Instagram) is that everything is cued up into a computer program that lines everything up on the relevant channels and then buttons are pressed - so it's not like Scott's doing his show, it comes to 2 o'clock and he's playing a song and thinks "oh yeah, better pick a TOH'"  - basically all audio output is lined up with timings before it goes to air (and that's how you get the Newsbeat bed to start exactly at the end of the last song before the news).

I think the last person to do it 'the old fashioned way' was Moyles, who would have every individual sound played with no automation. DJs also have the option of the cartwall screen if they want something not in the program line up.

Any fellow nerds fancy a job?

Interestingly the description lists 'New Music Friday' as some of the station sound the successful candidate would create, so perhaps these power intros are in-house productions.

I'm guessing this means Matthew Fisher (the guy behind stuff like the Big Weekend Mashup) is now leaving? Or if it's assistant is it a new role?

  10. So I don't know how many of you are listening to the radio at midnight on a Thursday morning, but last night I was as I was listening to the (quite brilliant) #HuwandGreg'sPizzaParty - the annual merger of daytime and specialist, where Huw Stephens welcomes Greg James and they just mess around for a show.

At about quarter past 11 Huw suggested they pick 3 people's requests, they'd get them on the show and they'd be the last three songs before midnight. I was about to go to bed so almost didn't bother texting in - but then decided what the heck and requested Mr Brightside by the Killers.

10 minutes later, just as I was getting into bed 'Radio 1' flashes up on my phone as an incoming call (yes I'm sad enough to have saved 03700 100 100 as a contact). Huw's producer, who's name avails me, had a million and one questions to help Greg and Huw interview me later - incidently none of which they ended up asking, because almost as soon as I'm put through to them we get onto radio geek talk.

Sorry for being so excitable about this but I wanted to shout about it somewhere, and here's as good a place as any. If you fancy listening to our geeky convo, the audio is here:  https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2YLN93Cg4B9RzBZd0ctZ2thOVE

  11. Mr Mills is saving us all for the next three mornings whist Mr Grimshaw is in Italy.  That means for three days only we get the intro back which Grimmy seems to have completely gotten rid of now :/ (he started today's show with a TOH ID, which kind of takes the excitment out of the whole 'It's 6:33 now it's time for the Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw' from Tina.)

In other news Mr Edmonson is in 1-4 for Scott.
