  1. A bit of music geekiness about the four notes:

the new one goes like this: note - higher note - higher note - lower note. Just about every radio jingle consisting of four notes goes like that. It's boring. And: it starts on a beat, so it plods.

the old one went: note - lower note - lower note - same note. good stuff. and it started on an off-beat, which makes it sound like a forward-movement. good stuff, again.

  2. the ramp doesn't really build, it's just STRAIGHT IN FULL MUSIC.

Indeed. That's what I'm missing. a bit of tension building up. It's not happening in the new jingles.

Also, they just don't sound serious enough. It's news, in the end. Not another feature.

As for the tagline, it's alright. The old one was not brilliant, either: why would you tell your listeners something like "digital, fm, online"? Surely, most people know that? Listen, watch, share is about the same. It surely is based on the obsession with social media, and in order to be cool, you need to have a tagline like that.

Also, I don't like the "out" bit; the old 4-note-rhythm just worked better; the new rhythm doesn't sound natural, there's weird lag in it.

The overall sound it rather cheap, commercial-radio-like. I would have expected a bit more from a national BBC radio station.

I will propably get used to it during the next days, so don't worry about that criticism too much. But I hope the next time they update their jingles, I will like them straightaway.

The R1 Newsbeat 4-note sonic logo has been used since January 2005. The 2003 package was created by David Lowe (creater of BBC News music), and this was reflected in the package. 2004 was a refresh by the Station Sound team. Everything from 2005 was created by Music4. The 2005 package was used until January 2007. The package that was on air a few days ago was a remix of the 2007 package, created in January 2009.

That exact 4-note-logo is what i miss the most. It was quite a great, simple, but strong logo. The new bit doesn't really reach that.

The best bit about them so far was Moyles this morning having fun playing Cher songs just after the tagline. Loved it!

  3. Was really good, I liked it as well. The bit at the very beginning with Matt crashing into lyrics, and the bit where he talked over a record were not so very well done; it was obvious that it was planned, which made it boring. Apart from that, a very promising first show.

  4. If Matt Edmondson ever gets given breakfast, well I think I'll just top myself because the world will have officially deteriorated to an irreversible low.
Haha...I'm gonna listen to his new show tonight to get a clear picture. I didn't particularly like his shows so far, but to be fair he never got the chance to develop his own show, it was all just stand-ins. And he was completely new to Radio at the beginning.

As for breakfast, Greg might seem the obvious choice now, but I think he has not a big enough personality to carry such a show. But then, he's young and has got time to develop.

Why do I even care? If Moyles really stays for another two years, I won't get to listen to his replacement much. That's when uni is over, so there will be considerably less time to listen to the radio ;)

  5. And don't really get it...there is a weekend DJ covering for Greg now, so all business as usual. It was irritating indeed that they had Scott to breakfast, Greg on drive and Dev or someone else doing Greg's show, but that's not happening this time. Last week, Grimshaw was doing Scott's show, not Reggie is on for Greg - Both nice experiments, methinks. Reggie is doing a good job at the moment.

  6. Great news that. I am enjoying Moyles more than ever at the moment. He is one of the best presenters of all times, absoulte Champions League. I wouldn't really have expected this because of the age-debate, but personally, I don't care about the age of a radio DJ as long as the show is entertaining. And the Moyles show definitely is.

I had to laugh at the "BBC chiefs have now realised they have NO ONE to replace him" bit :D As if they were sitting there thinking "okay, so who's there and could do the job? erm...erm...erm...(silence)...erm...anyone?" Great irony that The Sun was pulling names out of the hat all the time, yet no-one is actually capable of handling a breakfast show.

  7. We can only speculate for now but I very much doubt he'll be playing mainstream pop in that slot, it would be baffling. Maybe it will be a comedy show?

Well chances are it's not gonna be just a chat show, there will be some music in it. And that music will be rather usual playlist/mainstream stuff, not so much specialist, I believe.

  8. One wonders why there wasn't a smoother transition to Radio 2 though.
Well, Jo did Claudia Winkleman's show on several occasions, and she's been doing "In Concert" for a while (don't remember how long, but I do remember reading a post somewhere saying that Jo did the show way more often then the other presenter).

If, at some point, Ken Bruce leaves Radio 2, i'd quite like Jo to take over. Jo was perfect on that time of the day. That would definitely restore my old listening habit :)

  9. You realise Fearne is like 29, right? Admittedly she rarely sounds like it, and I couldn't actually believe that's how old she was when I found out.

Haha...yeah, I know that, but seriously, when I'm listening to her show I feel like she's talking to the 16 year olds. Not to me, at least. And 16 was some years ago, as far as I am concerned...

  10. I was sort of addicted to Jo Whiley's weekday show; was great listening, and really got me into a good mood every day. Fearne doesn't work for me, so as soon as Lauren Laverne is back on 6music, I'm off. Moyles is unbeatable, and Scott does great entertainment (a bit silly, though, at the moment; what's that "we're annoying Matt Fincham" stuff all about?). But I really don't care about the things Fearne talks about. I feel like I'm out of her target audience. Being 23...

  11. The interesting question is, will Radio 1 have to make similar cuts? Scrap the Big Weekend or make it a Big Saturday/Sunday? Less festival coverage in the summer?

If Radio 2 feels the pressure and decides to scrap one of it biggest brands, it seems as if nothing is safe on the BBC at the moment.

  12. ...that's according to twitter; anyone got a press release?

Fresh adventures ahoy! Am off to Radio 2 to do an evening show of new music of quality and distinction. Adieu Radio 1. It's been fantastic.

Plus I leave you in the tender care of the fabulous @huwstephens - he won't let you down!

...good to see Jo found a high-profile place to continue her career. Also, Huw Stephens will be great on daytime radio, I'm looking forward to hearing him.

Personally, I'm a bit sad to see Jo leave. I was listening to her midmorning show as often as possible and I still miss her. Can't get used to Fearne...
