Josh Brolin dropped by for a chat about his new film Whalefall and ended up revealing just how much the source novel affected him. He told Nick Grimshaw he agreed to the project before he’d even finished reading Daniel Krauss’s book, saying “I put it to my chest… and I sobbed” once he got to the end. Brolin called the story, about a son diving to find his dead father’s bones only to be swallowed by a whale, “the most claustrophobic, horrific idea of survival” he’s come across in years.

Brolin also had Nick and listeners laughing with a story about Ralph Fiennes on the set of Hail Caesar. He described watching Fiennes take what he thought was an extraordinary dramatic pause mid-scene, only to realise “it’s my line, he’s waiting for me to say those four words.” For his Heart Racer pick, Brolin went for Black Sabbath’s Iron Man, saying his five and seven-year-olds throw up devil horns to it on the school run.

Earlier in the show, Nick dug out a 1975 archive clip of Eastbourne tomato grower Charlie Roberts, who claimed his “happy tomatoes” grew to record-breaking sizes because he serenaded them with music and bones from dawn till dusk. Listeners loved it, with one joking they’d now go and sing to their basil plant.
Nick also gave 6 Music’s first play to Where He’s Gone, the brand new collaboration between Fontaine’s D.C. and Rosalía, taken from the band’s forthcoming album Dopamine Chamber.
