Trevor Nelson let the mask slip a little during Friday’s Funky Disco Friday, admitting he got “goosebumps” dedicating his Trevor Trove segment to Frankie Beverly, frontman of Maze, who died recently. Playing their anthem “We Are One,” Trevor recalled seeing the band live as a young fan: “It was like magic in a bottle,” he told listeners, adding that they “owned Hammersmith Odeon” despite never quite breaking into the mainstream charts. Texts poured in from fans sharing their own memories of sweaty house parties and legendary gigs in tribute.
Elsewhere, the show’s regular Five Seconds To Name quiz produced its usual chaos, with the cryptic clue “Happier Hounds” eventually revealed to point towards Florence and the Machine’s “Dog Days Are Over” (because, as Bobby explained, dog days being over makes for happier hounds). Simon in Pontypool bagged the win and the bragging rights into the weekend, while caller Lewis from Bristol charmed the studio with tales of his growing Kylie Minogue vinyl collection — missing just one record, the elusive Destruction single — and picked up a cheeky vinyl-cleaning tip from Trevor in the process.
There was also some light-hearted speculation about Celebrity Traitors, with Trevor and Bobby debating whether traffic reporter Sally Traffic would thrive in the game, and praising James Acaster and Richard E. Grant as early favourites ahead of the new series continuing on iPlayer.
