15 November 2017: Scott rang BBC IT after “breaking the internet”

Scott objected to people “breaking the internet”

Scott had become irritated by the phrase “breaking the internet”, especially when it was attached to photographs or stories that had merely received a lot of attention online.

He remembered the famous 2014 Kim Kardashian photograph involving champagne and a glass balanced on her bottom, then noted that Nicki Minaj had appeared in another Paper magazine shoot being promoted with similar language.

Scott decided the only sensible response was to investigate what would happen if somebody genuinely told an IT department they had broken the internet.

A champagne photograph became an IT emergency

Scott described taking a side-on photograph of himself opening champagne so that the spray landed in a glass resting on his “considerable behind”.

He then called the BBC technology service desk and said he urgently needed help because the internet no longer appeared to be working.

When the adviser asked for the normal technical details, Scott instead carefully explained the photograph and said he feared he had repeated what Kim Kardashian had done.

The adviser did not appear convinced that Scott had caused a worldwide outage.

Scott, meanwhile, wondered whether an alarm might be sounding somewhere in the building to announce that the internet had finally been broken.

Chris became a relaxation aid

The show also followed up listener Lauren’s claim that her friend Katie found Chris’s voice soothing when she was stressed.

Scott and Chris called Katie unexpectedly so Chris could test his calming qualities directly.

Elsewhere, Scott played some of the daytime-safe material from a late-night appearance with Charlie Sloth, while making clear that much of the previous evening’s conversation could not be repeated in the afternoon.
