The five-balling finally happened
Chris entered Friday leading Bangers 4–0.
The rule agreed months earlier was simple: a five-nil week meant trousers down.
Scott therefore needed the final caller, Marcus, to save him.
Both presenters changed their planned songs in an attempt to secure the decisive vote. Chris offered Eric Prydz’s “Pjanoo”, while Scott gambled on “Circle of Life” from The Lion King, arguing it would make the perfect soundtrack if the forfeit really happened.
Marcus chose Chris.
Five-nil.
Scott reluctantly removed his trousers in the studio while “Circle of Life” played and the moment was recorded for social media.
Chris celebrated what he described as the first proper five-balling, while Scott complained that Marcus had not been remotely impartial after being offered the prospect of meeting Chris at a future gig.
The programme tested a cure for the common cold
BBC Breakfast had reported advice that people should wash their hands for around 20 seconds, roughly the time required to sing “Happy Birthday” twice.
Scott and Chris decided to test the principle rather more dramatically.
Listener Dale, a student-experience coordinator in Manchester, was asked to get close to a colleague who already had a heavy cold.
He then went to the bathroom and thoroughly washed his hands while singing “Happy Birthday” twice.
Only afterwards did Scott and Chris realise that deliberately getting close to somebody with a cold had potentially exposed more than Dale’s hands, so they called him back and suggested washing his face too.
They made clear there was no guarantee he would actually remain healthy.
Live Lounge Month ended with a look back
The final show of September also reviewed some of the programme’s favourite moments from Live Lounge Month.
They remembered Rita Ora’s Honesty Game, Scott attempting to improve Hannah Reid and George Ezra through his new vocal-coaching method, The Script trying to name their exes and Royal Blood playing the Golden Shot.
James Arthur’s visit was also revisited, including a speech-jammer experiment during a phone call connected with his forthcoming tour.
With Radio 1’s 50th anniversary arriving that weekend, the month ended with the show looking backwards at both its recent guests and the station’s much longer history.
